modern and traditional Scottish music

Caledon is equally at home whether on the stage of the world-famous Sydney Opera House, singing to a packed auditorium of music lovers or inspiring the 55,000 soccer crowd at Hampden Park with a stirring new version of Flower of Scotland. The group had a sensational opening year which included highlights such as performing in front of Her Majesty The Queen at the opening of the Scottish Parliament and for His Excellency, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at the inaugural Robert Burns Memorial Lecture at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as well as closing Scotland's largest rock and pop festival, T - in the Park. They have gone on to complete sell-out tours of North America, Australia and New Zealand, and circumnavigate the globe in ten days with concerts and corporate events in N.Y., Florida, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and Berlin in that order!

Scotland's "three divine voices" (Edinburgh Evening News) also perform in Scotland! In 2005 they gave a famous concert at the Edinburgh Festival accompanied by the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra called "On A Beautiful Scottish Evening". This was filmed beneath the magnificent backdrop of a floodlit Edinburgh Castle and released nationwide in the U.S as a P.B.S TV special. The recording, containing Caledon's wonderful arrangements of great Scottish classics such as Loch Lomond; My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose; Will Ye Go Lassie, Go; Highland Cathedral and Auld Lang Syne, was released by REL Records on DVD and CD. Caledon has added The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brussels, and Wales to their exotic and varied itinerary but over 200 performances in Berlin, Germany make this comfortably their most familiar venue. Two of these Tipi Zelt am Kanzleramt shows have been recorded on CD and DVD.

Why the name “Caledon”? In order to be identifiably different to the dozens of tenor groups around the world, most of them calling themselves “The Three something Tenors”, they chose Caledon (one who comes from Caledonia, the ancient Roman name for Scotland) as their first step towards breaking the mould.

Alan Beck

Scots tenor Alan studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He later won the entrance scholarship to the Postgraduate Opera Course at the Royal Northern College of Music. In 1995 Alan won the British Wagner Society Singing Competition at Covent Garden and was subsequently awarded the society's Bayreuth Bursary. Later that year, he also won the Wolfgang Wagner Singing Competition in London in front of Dr Wagner and Dame Gwyneth Jones.

He made his operatic début in 1995 for Opera Ireland and was a principal tenor with the State Opera, Stuttgart from 1996 to 2002, singing many roles in the German and central European repertoire. Alan has also sung principal tenor roles for Lyric Opera Dublin and the Carl Rosa Opera and in 2002 he made his début as Siegmund in Wagner's Die Walküre at the London Coliseum for English National Opera. Most recently he has been busy singing with Welsh National Opera as Bacchus in Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos and appearing as Eisenstein in Haddo House Opera's 60th anniversary production of Die Fledermaus.

Ivan Sharpe

Ivan hails from Dunbartonshire, where at an early age he began his vocal training as a boy soprano. After winning a Pilgrim Scholarship, he became Head Chorister of Winchester Cathedral and also began lessons on the French horn. He graduated from Royal Holloway College with a BMus Hons degree and won a scholarship to study in the Opera School of the Guildhall School of Music. During this time, he was twice a finalist in the prestigious Kathleen Ferrier Singing Competition and The Royal Overseas League Singing Competition.

Upon leaving music college he returned to Scotland where he performed Tamino for Opera West, followed by several tours as a leading tenor with Scottish Opera-go-round. This success led to him making his debut, in quick succession, for Welsh National Opera, English National Opera, Flanders Opera, City of Birmingham Touring Opera and the Royal Carl Rosa Opera.

His roles include: Tamino - The Magic Flute; Don Ottavio - Don Giovanni; Ferrando - Cosi Fan Tutti; Hoffmann - Tales of Hoffman; Eisenstein / Alfred - Die Fledermaus; Camille - The Merry Widow; Novice - Billy Budd; Fairfax - Yeoman of the Guard; Nanki-Poo - The Mikado.

Over the last decade he has performed an extensive range of the tenor parts in the oratorio repertoire, from Handel's Messiah with The Vienna Boys Choir (recorded by Capriccio), the Requiems of Mozart and Verdi through to Elgar's Dream of Gerontius and britten’s War Requiem.

Beyond music, Ivan’s passions are sport (mostly watching although he still hits a golf ball far and wide) and spending valuable time with his three sons, especially on family holidays to Cornwall. He hates flying and would love to improve his toenails but, these two aside, is very happy with his rich and full life!

Ivan’s love for Scots song is obviously well catered for in his life with Caledon but he also performs as half of the romantic duo, Amanti.
